Unlicensed, stray and surrendered dogs are taken to the Westmoreland County Animal Shelter or a local humane society. Because of the vast number of unwanted pets, many will be put down. You may visit the shelter or humane society and adopt a cat or dog for a small fee. Virginia law requires that adopted pets must be spayed or neutered. Contact the Animal Warden for more information.

About Our Shelter | Animal Friends of Westmoreland
AFA was founded in 1983 to shelter and provide care for abused, abandoned and stray dogs and cats of Westmoreland County. We are a 501c3 non-profit, non-government funded, no-kill shelter that keeps animals free from the threat of unwarranted euthanasia. We adopt animals into responsible homes and vigorously promote the spay and neuter of all pets to eliminate the cruelty of animal overpopulation. AFA is located just outside of Latrobe on Route 217. Our facilities include Tigre Pavilion (cageless open-air cattery), Blessed's Dog Park and walking paths, private visitation rooms, and outdoor covered play areas.
