Almost anyone can be a successful bird owner. Let Dr. Shafar and the avian staff at The All Bird Clinic get you started on a successful relationship with a feathered companion.

Small pet birds make wonderful and entertaining companions. They are social, active and vocal. Anyone can enjoy their company, but they can also be easily managed by children (eight years and older), people with disabilities and senior citizens.

The best beginner birds are budgerigars, green cheek conures and cockatiels. Each of these come in a variety of color mutation. They are playful and dependably kind, if well-trained when young. Generally, they will allow being handled by more than one (1) person and are good family birds. They are smart.

Budgerigars are Australian grass parakeets. They are small and have an average lifespan of four (4) to six (6) years. Some budgerigars have a vocabulary of forty (40) to fifty (50) words and can sing entire songs.

Green cheek conures are South American birds, about twice the size of budgerigars. They have a softer voice than the larger conure species. They are very active and fun to watch.

Cockatiels are about three (3) times the size of budgerigars and are also Australian birds. they have an average lifespan of twelve (12) to fifteen (15) years. They are very active and fun to watch.

For the best pet quality, Dr. Shafar recommends that you begin with only one (1) bird. If you get two (2) birds, the birds will bond with one another more closely than they will bond with people. Male birds are preferred because they are more likely to learn to talk and seldom present with problematic reproductive issues or behaviors after maturity.

Regardless of which bird you choose, make sure they are healthy by bringing them to University Place Veterinary Hospital for a post-purchase examination. Begin your training and socializing right away and spoil them with spacious cages, toys and high quality formulated foods.
