With a lot of hard work and a little bit of luck, I entered the veterinary world. I put in my hours as a kennel worker and I attended NMSU for my undergraduate degree (Go Aggies!!). After four more years of hard studying, I graduated from Colorado State University Veterinary School in 1994. I originally wanted to be a SeaWorld vet, but after learning how much research is involved with a position like that, I came to Texas thinking I could pursue my career with horses. Ahhh, best laid plans: I ended up in Lubbock working in small animal medicine and wildlife and haven't regretted a moment of it. Animals are the most important thing to me: I want the best for my own pets and in turn, I want the best for all pets.

If you still haven't found your animal, the is a no-kill shelter located a few miles outside of Lubbock. Some of the animals who live there have been taken in because they would likely not live past the three safe days at a kill shelter. Most of the animals at The Haven were illegally dumped there. Dr. Brenda Wilbanks established the shelter to give these unwanted animals better lives. Some of the animals are born there and some of them never leave. Each animal has a sad story and each has given joy to the staff and volunteers at The Haven.

The fifth annual Strut for the Mutts dog-walking event hosted by the Haven Animal Care Shelter is set for Sept. 26 in Frank Higginbotham Park. "your calendars to strut with your mutt to benefit the dogs and cats at a Lubbock animal haven," suggests the A-J's Adam D. Young. Dogs will have the opportunity to walk their owners along a 1.5-mile course through the park. Their owners just have to pay a $20 pre-registration fee for adults or $10 for children. Many of the dogs that strut in the event are "graduates" of the shelter. "It's kind of like a homecoming for them," said Joe Wilbanks, owner of the nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter. Dogs adopted from the Haven can wear a bandana designating them as a "Haven Graduate."
