Squirrels, apparently, are not meant to be kept as pets. A Katy, Texas, woman has released her captive squirrel into the wild after it violently attacked her neighbor recently. She had the squirrel since it was just 3 weeks old, and she claims it's not normally aggressive. She also offered to pay her neighbor's medical bills. Harris County Animal Control was going to euthanize the animal after the attack, so the woman says she let it go into the wild. For more information please visit

When they are babies, they have not yet been taught how to properly fear humans and pets so of course they will crave your loving attention. They must fear humans and pets fortheir own protection and survival. They also must learn how to socialize, communicate and relate to other squirrels or they will be killed by the dominant squirrel in the territory. They must know how to run from cats and dogs so they won't be attacked. They must know not to climb up strangers legs begging for food because that stranger may kill them out of fear. They must learn how to build a nest in a tree and not in someone's atticor on the ground or they will be killed. They must learn how to forage for food on their own or they may starve without handouts.Nest box: Squirrels like a nice safe place to sleep. Some squirrels like to be in a giant sized igloo but wood nest boxes are fine too, so is a small cardboard box with a hole in it. Petco sells parrot nest boxes for $10. Justmake sure you get one with a big hole 2-2.5" diameter so they can get init. You can also hang those nest boxes outdoor on a tree or post if they willeventually be released.
